Participation in our Stud Dog and Brood Bitch classes that are held after BOB judging has been steadily declining, even as we acknowledge the vital role of breeders in preserving a breed, so we’ve tried to think of a way to revitalize these classes that should be important to breeders. In order to accommodate modern breeding practices using frozen semen of a deceased or foreign stud dog, or a retired or rehomed dam after her showing/breeding career, we’re trying new classes not requiring the presence of the parent called “Half-Sibling (sire or dam) Breeder Classes”. Two animals with only one same-sex parent in common constitute the entry. Because there is no parent in the ring for comparison, shared attributes of these half sibs may then be reasonably attributed more to the one parent in common since the other parent will be different in each animal. The same animals may not be exhibited as offspring in more than one ‘breeders’ competition’ class consisting of Stud Dog, Brood Bitch, Half-Sib (sire) and Half-Sib (dam) as the winning pairs of progeny will compete against each other for Best In Breeders’ Competition. However, a parent may be entered in both Stud Dog/Brood Bitch and also as the parent in the appropriate Half-Sib class if they meet all criteria including having different offspring represent them in each class. This year these will not be non-regular classes, but part of a ‘special attraction’ with a breeder-judge (not on the judging panel) officiating who will be named in the premium.
Stud Dog Class. For Stud Dogs, who may be neutered, with two (2) of their Offspring. Owner of the Stud Dog need not necessarily be the owner of the Offspring. While the merits of the Stud Dog are not to be considered in the placement of the entry, the Stud Dog will be examined to determine his adherence to the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Standard. The Offspring, but not the Stud Dog, must be entered in a Regular Class, Best of Breed or a Non-Regular Conformation Class.
Brood Bitch Class. For Brood Bitches, who may be spayed, with two (2) of their Offspring. Owner of the Brood Bitch need not necessarily be the owner of the Offspring. While the merits of the Brood Bitch are not to be considered in the placement of the entry, the Brood Bitch must be examined to determine her adherence to the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Standard. The Offspring, but not the Brood Bitch, must be entered in a Regular Class, Best of Breed or a Non-Regular Conformation Class.
Half-Sibling (Sire) Breeders Class. For two (2) Offspring of the same sire out of different dams. Offspring need not be owned by the same person(s), and even though the common parent is not being shown, it is that sire who is the ‘entry’ for the class. Both Offspring must be entered in a Regular Class, Best of Breed or a Non-Regular Conformation Class.
Half-Sibling (Dam) Breeders Class. For two (2) Offspring of the same dam by different sires. Offspring need not be owned by the same person(s) and even though the common parent is not being shown, it is that dam who is the ‘entry’ for the class. Both Offspring must be entered in a Regular Class, Best of Breed or a Non-Regular Conformation Class.
First place only will be awarded in each of the four classes, and the prize will be $100 cash in each class. The progeny pair winner in each of the four classes will then compete for the Best in Breeders Competition and a beautifully framed 28” x 23” original watercolor of a tri bitch and her three puppies by our beloved Art Smith!
Stud dogs may be castrated or brood bitches spayed and do not have to be entered in a regular conformation class. However, all progeny shown in this special attraction must be intact and must be entered in a Regular Class, Best of Breed or a Non-Regular Conformation Class.
Entries will be sent separately to Special Attraction secretary Jo Durrance and further instructions will be in the premium list—be patient! Along with the entry and entry fee of $37, we request that entries include a photo of the entered parent, along with the parent’s three generation pedigree, as we hope to include that information in a special little catalog—after all, this IS a competition of and for breeders, and we all want to know those things!
This special attraction will not be an evening ‘dress up’ event with an admission charge but will be held immediately after judging so that the ’show day’ just continues a little longer. Everyone is invited! Then people can party and dogs can rest in the evenings. We are tentatively planning for Thursday immediately after Winners Dog and before the General Meeting, but scheduling cannot be done until entries close so stay flexible and check the judging schedule!
(Trying to anticipate what your main questions will be—it may seem a little complicated!)
We look forward to celebrating preservation breeders and their wonderful Pembroke Welsh Corgis who are ‘breeding on’ for the future, and hope you’ll all be there, both inside and outside the ring!
