Joan Coates, DVM, MS, DACVIM is a veterinary neurologist and professor at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. She is also part of the Comparative Neurology Program at the College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Coates was part of the team that included Dr. Gary Johnson and Dr. Kerstin Lindblad-Toh who established that the same genetic mutation that causes DM in dogs also causes some forms of ALS in people.

Dr. Coates' focus now is the search for a treatment which will benefit both DM and ALS patients.
